Farther North of The North...

Ilocos Norte.. 1 Nation, 1 Lifetime, 7,107 Islands

Burgos, Bangui, Pagudpod & Adams Town!!!!

Burgos, Bangui & Pagudpod are the last three towns on the Northernmost part of the province of Ilocos Norte. They maybe the last but they are the first in nature & scenery. Undeniably breathtaking views either man-made or natural. Jump-off point is Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.

How to get there:

From Manila to Laoag is about 490 km., 10 hrs. drive by private car or 12 hrs. by bus. If you are traveling from Manila by private car, make sure not only 1 driver is going to take on the wheel, he will not enjoy the trip and the ride. It is quite a long way from home unless you have 3 or 4 days to spare for the trip that you can go @ cruising speed and plenty of rest time along the way.

By bus, take the night trip from manila and snore all the way to Laoag. ETA Laoag is 5-7am. Take heavy breakfast & load up some drinking water. Jeep or mini bus to your first destination. Van service is also available in Laoag for a day or 2. You need to do some hiking to reach some location if you take the public transport and a little more time of course, but it won't take in any way, even a bit, the excitement and the best of nature waiting for you.

See Map in Google

Main Attractions:

Cape Bojeador & Cape Bojeador Light House

The lighthouse is 42 kilometers from Laoag CityThis 66-foot-tall (20 m) octagonal stone tower is also known as Burgos Lighthouse or Faro de Cabo Bojeador, sets high on Vigia de Nagpartian Hill overlooking the scenic Cape Bojeador which sets idly down below waiting for action during the months of November to February when the mighty South Philippine Sea (now being claimed by China with their new 10 daz line Map - whatever that means) explode it's wrath to the coastline.

It is part of the Spanish government's master plan of illuminating the Philippine archipelago along with other lighthouses like Corregidor Lighthouse (600 feet -180 m),  the tower of Cape Melville Lighthouse (90 feet - 27 m). The northeastern-most being Cape Engaรฑo Lighthouse on Palaui Island,Santa Ana, Cagayan.  The Burgos lighthouse was first lit on March 30, 1892. For listing of all lighthouses in the Philippines, click here...

The lighthouse was named a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Institute on Aug. 13, 2005. Less than a year later, on June 20, the National Museum declared it a National Cultural Heritage. There is a small museum inside the tower building to share with you some knowledge about the Lighthouse.

The tower is sometimes closed to the public (for some safety reasons) but inside there are 164 steps of concrete & steel leading up to the lens room. Inside the lens room which is covered with clear glass panels (360 deg.) with the light beam is now powered by 10 solar cells, the view is just fantastic.

Why Bojeador? Or Faro de Bojeador? I can't extract any explanation from the locals or the caretaker, so I made made up my "bestest" guess... "Light of the Voyager". In Tagalog "Ilaw ng mga "Lakwatsero". In  maharang na Bikol "Karaba kan mga Rabasnon".

Make your own guess (or translation) in your own linggo @ the comment below.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formations

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation -  I have no words to describe it. The root word is "puraw", an Ilocano term which means white. Conjugate it to "Kapurpurawan" it would mean "Kaputiputian". Which is the general color of the rock formation.

Distance from Cape Bojeador is about 10km. (6miles). It is walkable for a hiker's standard.

The picture says it all...

From Kapurpurawan Rockys, walk 4 kms along the coastline and you will reach the first tower of this wind farm. By road it is about 12km.

Bangui Wind Farm

Bangui Wind-farm -  What is   Wind-farm? What does it do? The internet says: wind farm is a group of wind turbines (those gigantic propeller blades) in the same location used to produce energy. A large wind farm may consist of several hundred individual wind turbines.

Bangui Wind Farm consists of 20 windmills with height of 70m (230ft), spread across a 9km. stretch of the grey sand beach. The sight is monstrous. The silent mountain ranges @ the back witnessing the sometimes thunderous pounding of the sea. The  turbines are spaced 326 metres apart, with 41 metres long blades, with a rotor diameter of 82 metres and a wind swept area of 5,281 square metres. Each turbine is capable of producing electricity up to a maximum capacity of 1.65MW, for a total of 33MW. The sight is "oh-some".
Blue Lagoon @ Maira-ira Cove

22km. (10miles) from Wind Farm junction is Pagudpod Beach.

Pagudpod Beach & Blue Lagoon -   These are like Twin Beach except that they are not in good terms. Pagudpod Beach, the bigger one (almost a kilometer in length) is facing South and Blue Lagoon, the baby one is facing North East and in between them is a mountain. They are 16km apart. Same clean, white, fine, shiny sand. Both are good for all sorts of beach & sea sports. You name it, both can offer it and you can do it.

For List of Beach Resorts in Pagudpod, click here...

Kabigan Falls -

The waterfall is approximately 87-feet high and the very cold water drops into a natural pool surrounded by thick forest and lush greenery, located at the eastern part of Barangay Balaoi, about 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi) away from the national highway. The trek going to Kabigan Falls takes 30 to 40 minutes mostly of flat area and visible trail.

Patapat Viaduct -

The Patapat Viaduct, elevated 31 metres (102 ft) above sea level, is 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) concrete coastal viaduct that connects the Maharlika Highway from Laoag to the Cagayan Valley Region.  Located more than 16 kilometers from the town proper, it offers a scenic view of Pasaleng Bay.

Patapat Visduct
Why elevated by 31m? Because waves of the Pasaleng Bay during the months of November to February reaches as high as 30m. It cannot be constructed higher along the slope of the mountain because it would require sacrificing a lot of the slopes and no guaranty the ocean will not eat up the slope with such big & strong waves.

The Solution was the Viaduct which now become a design and construction marvel sort and a tourist attraction at that. This bridge is often referred to as the French Riviera of the North. It made possible cir cum-navigating entire Luzon going through the West coastal road and back though the Eastern side.
Annuplig Falls

Waterfalls of Adams Town

45mins. to 1hr. uphill drive from Patapat Viaduct is Adams Town, which prides itself with 18 waterfalls, 10 hanging Bridges and the highest mountain peak in Ilocos Norte, the Lover's Peak of Mt. Palemlem where one gets a 360 degree view of the entire Tinamburan Mountain Ranges and the perfect spot to see the sunrise as it blazes up from the Pacific over the mountains and murmurs down in sunset into the West Philippine sea.

Annuplig Falls, the "bestest" of the 18 waterfalls is a 25-foot high natural waterfall framed on either side by lush forests and has two cascading fall basins which flows down to Bolo River and empties itself to West Philippine Sea.

"Tukak" Ilocos Specialty
Native cuisine like the deep-fried-frog, yes FROG, as in FROG, which they call "Tukak" (It's the song of the frog, tukak, tukak, tukak) is one of the best. Home stay accommodations and cell phone signals are also available in the town.

BIRI Rock Formations 5-23 Million Years Old

Biri Island, Northern Samar.
"Biri" Amazing, "Biri" Fascinating, "Biri" Captivating & "Biri" "Biri" Old
1 Nation, 1 Lifetime, 7k107 Islands

Off the cost of Lavezares Town in Northern Samar, lies Biri Island rock formations. Composed of five small, rocky islands located in San Bernardino Strait opening up to the Pacific Ocean. "Biri" (Very) distinct and interesting shapes of rocks date back from the Early Miocene Period  (http://dinosaurs.about.com/od/CenozoicEra/a/Miocene-Epoch.htm), and their ages range from five to 23 million years old.

Aside from these Rock Formations, Biri island offers other "Biri" interesting activities like Cogon Surfing, Snorkeling, Scuba Diving, Kayaking, Treasure hunting, Deep Sea Fishing, Coastal Fishing, Rock Climbing and Mountain Treks.

See Map on Google
Going to Biri:

Location: (Not so "Biri" far) Eastern side of Southern Philippines

By Air: Cebu Pacific and Airphil Express have daily flights to Catarman which is the capital of Northern Samar. From Catarman, take a jeepney ride to the town of Lavezares, and from there, a 45-minute motorboat ride to Biri.

By Land:
Driving own car - from Manila, take SLEX, exit @ Calamba, all the way to San Pablo, Lucena, Tagkawayan, Naga City, Legaspi City, Sorsogon City and Matnog (16-18hrs @ cruising speed), now you are @ the southern most tip of Luzon. Take RORO to Allen (2hrs. sailing time) Roro leaves every hour till 7-8pm daily except "Biri" bad
weather days, drive to the next town of Lavezares (30mins), secured parking lots are available. Boat ride (45mins) to Biri Island, habal-habal to the Rock Formations. I told you it's not so "Biri" far. It is worth the trip anyway.

Bus: Airconditioned and non-airconditioned buses have daily trips from Manila to Visayas and Mindanao which will pass by the town of Lavezares. Alight at the municipal hall building and take a short walk to the market area. The boat terminal is located near the public market. Boat leaves 7-11 am

By Water: From Cebu, one can take a boat to either Calbayog City or Ormoc City. From Manila, passenger boats travel via Tacloban or Calbayog. From there Take a bus or van to Allen or Catarman then Jeep to Lavezares.

Enjoy the rides.

When to GO to Biri:

During the months of Feb. to early June, you get a clean, smooth and silent surf @ the island. July to
December, the Rocks are pounded every second by "Biri" big waves as high as 30-50ft from the Pacific (East) side. The breaking thunder can even be heard & seen in the mainland.

So it now depends on your taste. Either the serenity of summer or the thrill, excitement and adrenaline of "LPA" Low Pressure Area months.

Viewing Satisfaction is Guaranteed on location...

Stay for 2days-1night to see the sunrise & the sunset, the low tide and the high tide. If you are athletic and fit enough to get to the top of one of the rocks towering to some 300m above, make sure the high tide will not catch you there or you will have to swim ashore. You must start your Rock exploration (climbing) very early in the day to have enough time for the descent, because certainly you will enjoy the view at the top. As they always say "the best place is always on top" no matter what you do.

Maybe in another 5 to 23 million years, these Rock Islands will be gone, but you & I will be in a hundred years. So what are you waiting for? Travel now, while you can still appreciate & enjoy what nature has carved for you.

Maria Aurora Attractions
Maria Aurora's main attraction is Balete Park, home to the country's Millennium Tree, a centuries-old balete that is the biggest in Asia.

Balete Park & Millennium Tree
Location: Maria Aurora
This park contains a 600-year-old balete tree that was designated the official "Millennium Tree" of The Philippines. It is the largest tree of its kind in Asia, and it would take 60 grown men, holding one another at arm's length, to encircle its gigantic trunk.
Due to its age, the tree's thick roots have grown above ground, such that caves have formed under various sections of the trunk. This unique tree has generated national media attention and is now the most visited tourist spot in Aurora.

Dipaculao Town Attractions
Dipaculao has perhaps the most beautiful coastline in the province. Its main attractions are the coastal areas of Dinadiawan Beach, Ampere Beach and Borlongan Beach.

Dinadiawan Beach
Location: Along the Dicadi Highway
Getting There: Take a private vehicle from Baler town proper and use the Dicadi highway to drive north.

The municipality of Dinalungan is located between the mountains of Dipaculao and Casiguran. Trees abound in its mountain areas, where forests and falls dominate the landscape, and rare exotic birds, such as the endangered Philippine Eagle, soar over untrammeled coastline. Because of its variety of natural attractions, the area is ideal for nature trekking.

Casiguran Town Attractions
Most of the municipality's attractions are located by the shimmering waters of Casiguran Sound, an ideal locale for surfing, windsurfing, snorkeling and scuba diving, as well as simple relaxation. Motyong, the site of a small airport, is a beautiful white-sand beach with largely unspoiled scenery.

Casiguran Sound
Location: Casiguran
Getting There: Hire a motorized banca from Baler town proper and head north.
Travel Time: Approximately 5.5 hours
Casiguran Sound is a bay nearly enclosed by the Casiguran landmass and the cape of San Ildefonso. Only a kilometer-wide inlet serves to connect the sound to the sea. Its very location provides protection from the typhoons that seasonally ravage most of the province. Casiguran Sound is also unaffected by the monsoon winds that blow from October through February, making it an ideal spot for windsurfing, should facilities be available. For the time being, bring your own windsurfing equipment.

Motyong

There is a private airstrip located nearby, however, and plans are underway to make it into a full-sized airport, making Motyong ideal for possible resort investment.

Dilasag Attractions
Dilasag is known for its many white-sand beaches. The most popular is Canaware, a secluded lagoon with velvety sand and soothing waters.

Dilasag Coast
Location: Dilasag
Dilasag, a municipality at the northernmost area of Aurora, offers a coast with kilometer upon kilometer of white sand beach alternating occasionally with forests, hills, and cliffs. Its undeveloped features and natural attractions offer tourists the sensation of discovering something new and unspoiled. Inaccessible to most transportation, Dilasag Coast is a true getaway.

South of Baler

San Luis Town Attractions

Pimentel Falls [National Irrigation Authority (NIA) Watershed]
NIA WatershedLocation: San Luis
Getting There: From Baler town proper take a private vehicle or hire a jeep to Poblacion San Luis. From there, the NIA Watershed is just a few kilometers away, easily accessible along the main road leading to Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija.
Travel Time: One hour and 15 minutes
The NIA watershed is a small dam built beside a picnic area in San Luis. The water below the dam is clear, with a greenish reflection of the vegetation surrounding the pond. The place is a coconut plantation covered with short carabao grass and some shrubbery, making the place ideal not only for swimming but for picnicking as well.

Ditumabo Falls
Location: Barangay Ditumabo, San Luis
Getting There: Hire a jeep or take a private vehicle from Baler town proper going to Bgy. Ditumabo passing through Poblacion San Luis. From there, it is a 4-km hike over rough terrain and river trail. It is advisable to hire guides who are knowledgeable of the area.
Travel Time: Two hours and 15 minutes' drive and another 3-hour hike.
The crystal clear water of Ditumabo Falls gushes endlessly, flowing and twisting among countless rocks and boulders. The trek to the falls traverses several kilometers through the river and over a few steep mountain trails surrounding the falls on both banks. Occasionally, the trekker will unavoidably come upon fallen or cut logs that serve as either natural bridges or obstacles. Approximately 140 feet high, the falls are surrounded by huge cliffs-an unforgettable sight for nature lovers!

Dicasalarin Bay
Location: Dicasalarin, San Luis
Getting There: Take a tricycle from Baler town proper to the river outlet south of Sabang Beach. From there, hire a motorized banca which can take you to the area.
Travel Time: Five minutes by tricycle and approximately 45 minutes by boat.
With beaches, hills, a peninsula, a Grotto of the Blessed Virgin, coves, caves, a cave-pool and reefs; Dicasalarin Bay; while small in area, offers hours of recreation and relaxation for the entire family.

Dibut Bay
Location: Off Barangay Dibut, San Luis
Getting There: From Baler, hire a motorized banca and ask to be taken to the area.
The wide Dibut Bay coast affords numerous sights-island formations, peninsulas, short stretches of beaches, and imposing cliffs. One formation, appropriately named "Birhen" (meaning "virgin"), resembles the Virgin Mary praying amidst the waves. Since Dibut Bay is not a favored spot for the fishing industry, tourists may catch a glimpse of the magnificent Hammerhead shark and Mako shark. For diving enthusiasts, moreover, Dibut Bay is the perfect place to test out your latest flip.

Banju Springs
Location: Barangay Real, San Luis
Getting There:Take a private vehicle or hire a jeep from Baler town proper to Barangay Real in San Luis. Another kilometer-and-a-half walk on a rough road passing through a rice field will take you to this site.
Travel Time: Approximately an hour's drive
Natural terraced steps overflowing with spring water best describe the Banyu Springs. A mass of ferns surrounds the springs, which stretch up to a hundred meters toward the source of the spring, hidden amidst shrubbery.

Cunayan Falls
Location: Barangay Pimentel, San Luis
Getting There: Hire a jeep or take a private vehicle from Baler town proper to Barangay Real in San Luis, where a short walk from the end of the road near the river will take you to the falls.
Travel Time: Two hours

Barely a hundred meters away from a dirt road passable to most vehicles, Cunayan Falls is one of the more accessible falls of Aurora. The falls strongly sprays from a cliff where greenery and even some flowers grow, creating a great contrast against the white and light gray gravel sand area washed out by intermittent floods.
