Off the cost of Lavezares Town in Northern Samar, lies Biri Island rock formations. Composed of five small, rocky islands located in San Bernardino Strait opening up to the Pacific Ocean. "Biri" (Very) distinct and interesting shapes of rocks date back from the Early Miocene Period (http://dinosaurs.about.com/od/CenozoicEra/a/Miocene-Epoch.htm), and their ages range from five to 23 million years old.
Aside from these Rock Formations, Biri island offers other "Biri" interesting activities like Cogon Surfing, Snorkeling, Scuba Diving, Kayaking, Treasure hunting, Deep Sea Fishing, Coastal Fishing, Rock Climbing and Mountain Treks.

Location: (Not so "Biri" far) Eastern side of Southern Philippines
By Air: Cebu Pacific and Airphil Express have daily flights to Catarman which is the capital of Northern Samar. From Catarman, take a jeepney ride to the town of Lavezares, and from there, a 45-minute motorboat ride to Biri.
By Land:
Driving own car - from Manila, take SLEX, exit @ Calamba, all the way to San Pablo, Lucena, Tagkawayan, Naga City, Legaspi City, Sorsogon City and Matnog (16-18hrs @ cruising speed), now you are @ the southern most tip of Luzon. Take RORO to Allen (2hrs. sailing time) Roro leaves every hour till 7-8pm daily except "Biri" bad weather days, drive to the next town of Lavezares (30mins), secured parking lots are available. Boat ride (45mins) to Biri Island, habal-habal to the Rock Formations. I told you it's not so "Biri" far. It is worth the trip anyway.
Bus: Airconditioned and non-airconditioned buses have daily trips from Manila to Visayas and Mindanao which will pass by the town of Lavezares. Alight at the municipal hall building and take a short walk to the market area. The boat terminal is located near the public market. Boat leaves 7-11 am
By Water: From Cebu, one can take a boat to either Calbayog City or Ormoc City. From Manila, passenger boats travel via Tacloban or Calbayog. From there Take a bus or van to Allen or Catarman then Jeep to Lavezares.

When to GO to Biri:
During the months of Feb. to early June, you get a clean, smooth and silent surf @ the island. July to
December, the Rocks are pounded every second by "Biri" big waves as high as 30-50ft from the Pacific (East) side. The breaking thunder can even be heard & seen in the mainland.
So it now depends on your taste. Either the serenity of summer or the thrill, excitement and adrenaline of "LPA" Low Pressure Area months.

Stay for 2days-1night to see the sunrise & the sunset, the low tide and the high tide. If you are athletic and fit enough to get to the top of one of the rocks towering to some 300m above, make sure the high tide will not catch you there or you will have to swim ashore. You must start your Rock exploration (climbing) very early in the day to have enough time for the descent, because certainly you will enjoy the view at the top. As they always say "the best place is always on top" no matter what you do.
Maybe in another 5 to 23 million years, these Rock Islands will be gone, but you & I will be in a hundred years. So what are you waiting for? Travel now, while you can still appreciate & enjoy what nature has carved for you.
